Mata Palo Beach - Sea Turtles Project


Location: " Mata Palo Beach Sea Turtles Project " is located on the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Around 5 hours away from San Jose City by land, 1.5 kilometers away from Mata Palo town, 18 kilometers away from Manuel Antonio Beach and 12 kilometers away from Dominical Beach.


It's a beach area with an extension of 12 kilometers of length and it represents an important sanctuary for the conservation of several kind of Sea turtles such as Parrot, Leather Back, Carey and Pacific Black. 


Throughout its 14 years of continuous labors in protection of the Sea turtles, this project it has saved and released at the sea over 55,000 baby turtles.   

     

Weather: The average temperature is between 26ª and 32º Celsius. Rainy Season is going from 2nd half of April till 1rst half of December. It rains moderately.


Flora: The forest is dry tropical on transition to wet.


Fauna: Is possible to find a large variety of sea and land species including craps, lobsters, sea sponges, several kind of sea fishes and turtles, iguanas and many kind of birds as Pelicans, frigates and sea gull.


Main attractions:  the yearly visit of hundreds of sea turtles mainly of the kind of " Parrot Turtle ", from July to December. 


The Annual Sea Turtles Festival, on October of every year, with interesting chatters given for local and international Sea Turtles experts, baby turtles releases, many other conservation activities and visitors from many latitudes. Festival is a mandatory visit for any serious Sea Turtles lover.


The Project disposes of next services:


· Electricity.

· Potable Water

. Guest House with share bedrooms with twin beds, room fans, share bath with hot shower and laundry area. Safety Box is not available.

Goals of Project


* Reduce the effects of human and natural menaces on Sea Turtles that get to the beach.

* Generate scientist and statistic info related with the nurse ring activities of sea turtles.

* Inform to the neighbor communities about importance of the project and effects of human activities on Sea Turtles.


Main Duties of Volunteers


* Installation of Signs on the Beach Area.

* Give a support to labors of Data collection and Nurseries Protection Patrols.

* Locate, count and relocate Baby Turtles on Nurseries.

* Monitor the Baby Turtles incubation process in nurseries.

* Counting and releasing of the Baby Turtles.

* Exhumation of Dead bodies in the nest.

* Any other duties demands the Administration of Project.


The work shift is of 7 hours daily, 6 days a week.

Day shift: from 8:00 a.m. to 15:00 p.m.  Night Shift: from 19:00 p.m. to 02:00 a.m.


The candidate to participate in this program must to:


1 Fill the form " Offer of Voluntary Service "

2 Sign the " Agreement concerning to voluntary service in a conservation area " that demands  MINAE.

3 Respect the " Voluntary Work "  rules.


Work Requirements


1 A Basic Spanish Level

2 Many wishes to work and a big love and attraction for wild animals

3 Good health and good physical condition

4 Ability to walk long distances daily


Meals description


Mainly rice, beans, pasta, meat, vegetables and fruits.


What to Bring


Blanket, sheets, Mosquitoes Repellent, Sun Lotion, Tooth Paste and Brush, Soap, Deodorant, Comfortable and Fresh Wear and comfortable and closed Shoes.


For leisure time


* Give a visit to any of neighbor beaches like Manuel Antonio, Quepos or Dominical, where is possible to practice good surfing, to do many other outdoor activities and to have access to many services as telephone, internet, banks, supermarkets, restaurants, discoteques and bars.

* Give a tour to some of neighbor National Parks like Whale Bay or Manuel Antonio.

* Give a tour to Matapalo Town, closest town to project, where is possible to have access to services as telephone, internet and supermarkets.   


What's included: Accommodation on Single or Double Room with share bathroom, 4 daily mealtimes. Volunteering Work under supervision of staff of Zoo. Airport Pick Up In/Out on scheduled arrival/ departures dates only, Transfer to Bus Terminal, Bus Ticket to Project- One Way, Certificate of Participation, C.R. Souvenir and taxes.


Not Included: International air fare, CR departure taxes ( $26 per person ),Airport Charge ( $ 9 per person ), meals and drinks not specified in the itinerary, and gratuities or extra costs associated with changes in your itinerary for reasons beyond our control.
